A colourful and musical epic. In which the horror and romance of the animal fable come to life. In which the fox and the crow fight over the cheese and the lion sits on his throne. In which the grasshopper makes music, the ant rebukes him and the elephant crushes them both underfoot. The dumb animal has spoken to mankind from time immemorial, on every continent. Orkater explores “riffing on a theme” both musically and in imagery, and circles the fable like a hawk circling its prey. Because the more frequently fables are retold, the more truth they seem to contain.
Devised and performed by a large ensemble of Orkater makers: the Lars Doberman actors (Reinout Scholten van Aschat, Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Mattias Van De Vijver, Jip van den Dool, Jochem van Laarhoven), Dionne Verwey, Erik van der Horst, all the musicians from K.O. Brass! (Patrick Votrian, Randell Heye, Romain Bly, Robert-Jan Looysen and Kobi Arditi/of Kyteman Orchestra fame) and directed by Suze Milius (winner of the Erik Vos Prize 2018).
The heart of a hare or the courage of a lion. Sly as a fox, stupid as a donkey. Tinkering ants, hoarding hamsters, faithful dogs. The animal realm as a mirror of human society. Fabels arise when humans give animals the gift of speech: a made-up story that depicts the truth. Orkater explores “riffing on a theme” both musically and in imagery, and circles the fable like a hawk circling its prey. Because the more often fables are retold, the more truth they seem to contain.
